Support for Dale Sveum
Friday 10-10-2008 12:19pm CT

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona says the Milwaukee Brewers would be wise to make Dale Sveum their permanent skipper for next season. Sveum has a World Series ring with the Red Sox as Francona’s third base coach in 2004 and 2005. Francona said he wouldn’t tell another team what to do, but he says Sveum knows the game, communicates well, and has players’ respect.
New grass

Miller Park is scheduled to get new outfield grass this off-season.  The same type of grass used in the infield wil be used in the outfield, according to team officials.
Key decisions for team brass in offseason

Some key decisions face the Milwaukee Brewers brass during the offseason.

Who will be the team's next manager? How much can the Brewers offer soon-to-be-free agent pitcher CC Sabathia?

General manager Doug Melvin says he'll sit down with Dale Sveum in Phoenix next week.

Sveum served as interim manager after Ned Yost was fired and took the team into the postseason for the first time in 26 years.

Sabathia earned the playoff-clinching victory in the final game of the regular season and helped the Brewers with an 11-2 record after a mid-season trade.

Melvin says they should have time to approach Sabathia, because he likely won't sign without testing the free agent market.

Scoreboard

An HD scoreboard is on tap for Miller Park.  It'll cost between $9 to $12 million dollars.  The Brewers will pay for half of the project.  The Miller Park Stadium District will pay for the rest of the project.  The money would come from taxpayers in the five-county stadium tax district.   A new sound system will also be installed. The project is expected to be complete by opening day 2010.

Rickie Weeks

Rickie Weeks had torn cartilage removed from his left knee today. Weeks was injured in Saturday night’s Game-3 against Philadelphia. The team says Weeks will start his therapy later this week – and he’ll be fully recovered by spring training. Weeks was trying to beat out an infield hit when he touched the first base bag in an awkward position. The knee became twisted as he ran past the base.
CC Sabathia

CC Sabathia says it’s not a given that he’ll leave Milwaukee for the big money this winter. The left-handed starter is expected to be one of the hottest free agents. Sabathia was traded from Cleveland in July to try and get the Brewers to the World Series. He only increased his stock by going 11 and 2 in Milwaukee with a 1.65 ERA. Sabathia insists money won’t be the only thing in his decision on where to sign next year. He says he loved playing in Milwaukee, and being with people he enjoys will be important as he decides his future.
